Mary Magdalene

The subject of our next online icon writing class is a beautiful Italian Icon of Mary Magdalene. We will be using egg tempera paints and gold leaf gilding as our materials. You receive a materials list when you register for the class. We have two, 90 minute sessions on each of the four days. It is like being on a virtual Icon writing retreat! Students range from complete beginners to those who have painted several icons already. Each step of the icon writing process is demonstrated with videos and then a question and answer period following. Most students also make use of our private FB group where they share progress photos and get encouraging feedback from the teacher as well as from other students.

As one who was cleansed from demons, she was able to give hope to all those sinners who thought there was no hope. She followed Jesus and was one of the Apostles, Mary of Magdala represents a human being who is open and available to receive the teachings of Christ. Two books on the subject that I am enjoying reading are: “The Meaning of Mary Magdalene, by Cynthia Bourgeault and The Gospel of Mary Magdalene by Jean-Yves Leloup. Another good one to read is :”Saint Mary Magdalene, Prophetess of Eucharistic Love”, by Father Sean Davidson.

One of the most important aspects of icon writing is to become very familiar with the saint being depicted, either through prayer, research or reading. There are many different portraits and icons of Mary Magdalene. This class is an opportunity to create a simple image derived from a 14th century Italian Icon that is both simple and beautiful in its composition and color scheme.
