Color in the Icon

Improve your ability to understand and mix colors for your icons through the demonstrations and exercises given in this class. Suitable for beginners as well as more advanced iconographers. See more here.

Beginning with the Greek Key Palette and then moving on to include more colors, we will paint the icon of Saint George and the Dragon. There are no expectations of students to finish by the end of the class. Rather, online support and answered questions create an environment to experiment and learn.

Color Attributes

Transparency, opacity, density, value and chroma are all characteristics of color. These are explained through powerpoint slide talks as well as with video demonstrations on how to achieve these using egg tempera.

This class is a wonderful way of building a community and a learning environment. We have a private FB page just for online Icon Students who study with Christine Hales. Students exchange links, information, and photos of their progress and receive valuable feedback.

Prayer is an important part of icon writing. Christine is expert at creating an atmosphere of faith and creativity for each student .

Icon painting can be theology in colors when the principles of light and harmony are understood and applied.
