California Icon Class
We had an inspired and God filled California Icon class this past month at Mount Calvary Monastery in Santa Barbara, CA.
While Twelve students from across the USA gathered together to experience the hospitality of Mt. Calvary, we enjoyed a beautiful Episcopal Monastery nestled in the hills of Santa Barbara. Studying together, students learn the basics of the egg tempera Icon painting technique in these workshops. I usually give powerpoint presentations in the evenings that focus on the history of Icons. I also share some of the hidden dynamics of good Icon drawing and painting in these talks.
In order to be able to offer these short, concentrated Icon classes, I do a lot of preparation beforehand. This is to enable students the maximum advantage to learn while painting the Icon image. I give slide talks in the evening in order to cover aspects of prayer and icon writing that may not have been incorporated during the day, and make the best use of the time we have together.
Students who have taken class with me before, or continuing students who know how to paint icons are able to email me at least two weeks before class to discuss the Icon they would like to paint during the class. This way, continuing students may obtain ongoing support in the work they do on their own.
